Glastonbury Festival Line-Up 2008 - The Bandstand

The line-up for this year's Glastonbury Festival, taking place between Friday 27th and Sunday 29th of June, 2008, has now been announced. Please note that details may be subject to change and some acts are still to be revealed, so watch this space for updates.

The Bandstand

BandStand - Ray Milhuisen

The Bandstand is a small stage nestling at the confluence of three of the original markets along from the Pyramid Stage and in sight of the Cider Bus. Programmed by Steve Henwood of Bath Fringe Festival, the Bandstand brings performers into the heart of Babylon, inspiring shoppers and giving (mainly local) artists a platform to display their talents, perhaps showing why they should be considered in future years for the larger stages. Come and see a star in the making at the Bandstand.

Sit down, chill out and enjoy everything from brass bands to acoustic guitarists and music from the Andes to New Orleans, or perhaps even Shepton Mallet! And watch out for wicked walkabout performances.

Railroad Bill on the Bandstand - John C Scott

The Bandstand is truly an oasis amongst the madness of retail therapy.

Glastonbury Festival Line-Up 2008 - Jazz Lounge

The line-up for this year's Glastonbury Festival, taking place between Friday 27th and Sunday 29th of June, 2008, has now been announced. Please note that details may be subject to change and some acts are still to be revealed, so watch this space for updates.

Jazz Lounge

Jazz Lounge 3 by Mike FlynnJazz is alive and well in the UK. Young musicians taking their skills out of the jazz clubs and into the worlds of roots, rock and dance music are coming up with fresh and accessible ways to grab an audience by the ears and The Jazz Lounge at Glastonbury Festival is geared up to celebrate the scene’s rude health with a melting pot line up over the Festival weekend. Situated in the heart of the markets adjacent to the Meeting Point and to the Bandstand, the Jazz Lounge has been an outstanding success since it first opened.

The Jazz Lounge came into being in 2004 when Glastonbury Festival’s markets supremo, Dick Vernon, decided to recognise the strength and variety of jazz by creating a new space in the Festival site. Together with designer Mahala Katz and music journalist Tony Benjamin, he launched the Jazz Lounge for the 2004 Festival and its success means that it has remained a fixture of the programme ever since.

Michael Horovitz and the William Blake KlezmatrixThe mission is to create a distinctive space that stands out from other venues and establishes a great environment to be in and to hear the music. Design concepts are evolved each year around the template of a jazz café with tables, chairs and sofas - with the emphasis on making a comfortable and chilled space that can still turn into a dance arena when the mood arises.

The music programme aims to catch a wide range of young and less recognised musicians from across the country and give them a chance to show Glastonbury what they can do. Each year a small jazz community grows up in the Lounge and new contacts, projects and collaborations emerge that live on after the festival. At the same time more established performers are welcomed to enjoy the lively audience the Lounge attracts.

Sheelanagig by Toby FarrowYou will find the full range of contemporary jazz here - funk, groove, free form, rhythmic live music, jazz poetry and quality dance played by some of the best young performers from city scenes (London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol in the main). A range of vocalists join the house band of the day, normally in the late afternoon and early evening. After that some great soloists and bands in their own right have their sets before jamming with the house bands through the wee small hours.

This year's line-up features a broad spectrum of talents old and new; from the godfather of British Jazz poetry, Michael Horovitz (appearing with the William Blake Klezmatrix) to the grooving funk fun of the Filthy Six; Sheelanagig to Country Dad. Ultimately, the Jazz Lounge hopes to give as many people as possible a chance to discover that jazz isn't scary or difficult ¬ even if it can be a bit strange at times!

Glastonbury Festival Line-Up 2008 - Cinema Field

The line-up for this year's Glastonbury Festival, taking place between Friday 27th and Sunday 29th of June, 2008, has now been announced. Please note that details may be subject to change and some acts are still to be revealed, so watch this space for updates.

The Cinema Field

Cinema Field Screen 1Welcome to the Cinema Field, Glastonbury Festival's film venue, where you can catch up on all the very best movies and documentaries the moving pictures industry has to offer; from old classics to the very latest releases. No Festival can be complete without it's all night open air screens and there's no sitting in stuffy crammed tents watching grainy, dim videos on postage stamp screens. We offer plenty of room for all and, best of all, it's free! In 2008 we have many cinematic treats both new and old in store, and when I say old, I mean old; but more of that later.

Kill Bill Volume OneIn the Marquee, showing films throughout the day, we have The Bourne trilogy and Quentin Tarantino's martial arts epics, Kill Bill 1 & 2 as well as a plethora of major films from the past year or so. The Outdoor screen kicks off on Thursday night with the timeless time travel classic, Back to the Future. Other treats in store for the outdoor screen include full-on comic book action in the shape of Iron Man and Transformers, as well as much more. This year, we will be keeping a careful eye on the age groups watching certain films and that film certificates are adhered to both in the Marquee and outdoor screen. THere are plenty of family-friendly films being shown throughout the Festival, however.

Sir Ben Kingsley in The WacknessThis year we will be hosting two advance preview screenings; The Wackness, courtesy of Revolver Entertainment, which screens at midnight on Sunday in the Marquee. Set in New York in the sweltering summer of 1994, The Wackness tells the story of a troubled teenage drug dealer (Josh Peck), who trades pot for therapy sessions with a drug-addled psychiatrist, brilliantly played by Sir Ben Kingsley. Things get more complicated when he falls for one of his classmates, who just happens to be the doctor's daughter. Set against the backdrop of the greatest year in hip hop history, this is a coming-of-age story about sex, drugs, music - and what it takes to be a man. The Wackness is in cinemas on August 29th. For more information, click here. The other is a U certificate film which will be advertised extensively on site and starts at 10pm on Sunday night.

Fritz Lang's MetroploisAt 1am every night over the Festival weekend, we will be showing three silent era classics on the Park Stage. Friday's film is The General. On Saturday it's Metropolis, Fritz Lang's silent sci-fi classic. On Sunday it's the astonishing vampire classic, Nosferatu.

Its been several years since we had fine weather, so please be sure to wrap up warm if you're watching the outdoor films. If it’s a clear night, the outside air temperature can drop surprisingly low in the early hours, so if you're coming in early and staying for the long haul, you are strongly urged to bring blankets and sleeping bags.

Behold the state of the art digital projector!Last year we ran Digital Cinema on four of the outdoor films for the first time. It proved to be such a success that this year we have dispensed with the traditional 35mm projectors that have done us proud since 1985 and plumped for a state of the art NEC2500 projector and a Dolby show store/Show Player courtesy of Dolby Laboratories. The marquee has also seen a switch from 35mm to HD video projection, this year screening from HDDVD and Blu-Ray discs through an HD projector. Both venues have Dolby 5.1 surround sound systems.

And now to the program:-

Becoming Jane (2007) PG 29-Jun-08 18:00 Marquee Scope

The year is 1795 and Jane Austen is a feisty 20-year-old and emerging writer who already sees a world beyond class and commerce, beyond pride and prejudice, and dreams of doing what was then nearly unthinkable - marrying for love. Naturally, her parents are searching for a wealthy, well-appointed husband to assure their daughter's future social standing. They are eyeing Mr. Wisley, nephew to the very formidable, not to mention very rich, local aristocrat Lady Gresham, as a prospective match. But when Jane meets the roguish and decidedly non-aristocratic Tom Lefroy, sparks soon fly along with the sharp repartee. His intellect and arrogance raise her ire - then knock her head over heels. Now, the couple, whose flirtation flies in the face of the sense and sensibility of the age, is faced with a terrible dilemma. If they attempt to marry, they will risk everything that matters - family, friends and fortune.

Advance preview Screening U 29-Jun-08 22:00 Outside

National Tresure 2 (2007) Book of Secrets PG 29-Jun-08 21:00 Marquee

Treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates looks to discover the truth behind the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, by uncovering the mystery within the 18 pages missing from assassin John Wilkes Booth's diary.

Juno (2007) 15 29-Jun-08 23:59 Outside

A tale told over four seasons, starting in autumn when Juno, a 16-year-old high-school junior in Minnesota, discovers she's pregnant after one event in a chair with her best friend, Bleeker. In the waiting room of an abortion clinic, the quirky and whip-sharp Juno decides to give birth and to place the child with an adoptive couple. She finds a suitable couple in the Pennysaver personals, contacts them, tells her dad and step-mother, and carries on with school. The chosen parents, upscale yuppies (one of whom is cool and laid back, the other meticulous and uptight), meet Juno, sign papers, and the year unfolds. A sharp and witty comedy.

The Wackness (Advance preview screening) 15 29-Jun-08 23:59 Marquee

It's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip-hop. Set against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Ben Kingsley) for therapy.

Nosferatu PG 30-Jun-08 01:00 Park Field

An unauthorized production of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Stoker's legal heirs didn't give their permission, so the names had to be changed. But this wasn't enough; the widow of Bram Stoker won two lawsuits (in 1924 and 1929) in which she demanded the destruction of all copies of the movie. Fortunately, copies of the movie were already too widespread to be entirely eradicated. Later, the Universal studios could break her resistance against this movie. Count Orlok's move to Wisburg (Obviously the real "Wismar") brings the plague traceable to his dealings with the Realtor Thomas Hutter, and the Count's obsession with Hutter's wife, Ellen the only one with the power to end the evil.

Shine a Light (2008) 12A 30-Jun-08 02:00 Outside

Martin Scorsese and the Rolling Stones unite in "Shine A Light," a look at The Rolling Stones." Scorcese filmed the Stones over a two-day period at the intimate Beacon Theater in New York City in fall 2006. A host of great cinematographers were on hand to capture the raw energy of the legendary band.

Bourne Ultimatum (2007) 12A 30-Jun-08 02:30 Marquee

Bourne is once again brought out of hiding, this time inadvertently by London-based reporter Simon Ross who is trying to unveil Operation Blackbriar - an upgrade to Project Treadstone - in a series of newspaper columns. Bourne sets up a meeting with Ross and realizes instantly they're being scanned. Information from the reporter stirs a new set of memories, and Bourne must finally, ultimately, uncover his dark past whilst dodging The Company's best efforts in trying to eradicate him.
